The Australian state of Victoria recorded 134 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections in that state to 2,942, Prime Minister Daniel Andrews announced on Wednesday.

Among the new cases, 123 are under investigation, while 11 have been linked to closed outbursts.

A total of 75 people from nine public apartment towers in the city of Melbourne have tested positive, Andrews said, adding that more than a million tests have now been conducted in the state since Jan. 1.

Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, Victoria regional area, will enter phase 3 at 11:59 p.m., meaning residents will no longer be allowed to leave their homes unless they are in grocery shopping, nursing, exercising or working for six weeks, prime minister announced on Tuesday.

“I think a sense of comfort entered us as we let our frustrations improve. I think everyone knows someone who hasn’t followed the rules the way they should. I think each of us knows that we have no choice but to take very, very difficult steps , “Andrews said.

In a statement Wednesday, the state government says Victoria Victoria will also “dramatically” increase police presence in and around metropolitan Melbourne to conduct a lockout, including 264 members of the Australian Defense Forces assisting in field operations.

Police will continue to conduct home visits and patrol public places across Victoria, the statement said.

Victoria Police has carried out 810 on-site inspections of homes, businesses and non-essential services across the state in the past 24 hours, the government said.
