The mountaineering canyon dies in the fall near Mather Point
Maria A. Salgado Lopez, 59, of Scottsdale, Arizona, took a hiking trail on Friday and took a photo with her family when she accidentally fell off the edge of the canyon, according to Press release for the National Park Service.
She and her family were hiking in an area west of Mather Point along the canyon of Southern Rome, officials said.
Rangers of Grand Canyon National Park found her body about a hundred feet below the perimeter, according to the park service.
“The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examination Office,” the park service said in a statement.
The park, which had nearly 6 million visitors last year, invites all visitors to stay on marked trails and promenades and keep a safe distance from the edge of the perimeter.
The South Rome Visitor Center is located south of Mather Point, which is one of the most popular view of the canyon and offers spectacular views, especially at sunset.
Last year, at least two people were killed after falling over the edge of the Grand Canyon. One of them, a man in his late fifties, apparently took a selfie when he slipped and fell, a CNN spokesman for the Eagle Point observation area at Grand Canyon West said at the time.
