If they are to rename the Washington Redskins, these are the most likely candidates

Team owner Dan Snyder has in the past resisted calls to change the team’s name due to racist connotations, but the team announced on Friday that it would review the name.

“In light of recent developments in our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing that the team will be subject to a thorough review of the team’s name,” the team said in a statement. “This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has had with the league in recent weeks.”

So how could the name of the new team be? Here are the best candidates to be debated.

Washington Redtails

Washington Redtails got some money on social media, and designer Pete Rogers even made fun of some designs of the redesigned team logo and uniform.

“The name‘ Redtails ’celebrates Tuskegee’s World War II aircraft, which were the first African-American military airmen in the U.S. Armed Forces,” Rogers wrote. “The nickname ‘Redtails’ comes from their planes that had a distinct crimson tail.”

Head coach Ron Rivera even specifically mentioned honoring the military during the discussion of changing the team’s name.

“This is a matter of personal importance to me,” Rivera said, “and I look forward to working closely with owner Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting the Indians and our military.”

Washington Warriors

Another name that floated was the Washington Warriors, as it would allow the team to retain similar elements, such as the arrow used in some team designs.

But the name drew several reactions on social media.

“People tweeting about Washington warriors with feathers and arrows on the logo missed the whole damn point,” Rebecca Nagle posted on Twitter. “The culture of the natives and our tribes are real, contemporary, diverse and ALIVE. We are not cartoons. We are not mascots.”

There’s also the problem of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors who already have warriors on their team.

Washington Monuments

Washington Monuments is another popular name suggested on social media, which makes sense given that the Washington Monument is located in the National Center in Washington, D.C.

The obelisk was built in memory of George Washington, the first president of the United States.

However, the odds of betting are not in her favor.
