The UN Security Council is expected to adopt the first resolution on coronavirus on Wednesday
The United Nations Security Council is expected to adopt the resolution by a virtual vote Wednesday, urging countries to stop hostilities to focus on the Covid-19 virus, according to a draft resolution seen by CNN.
Nearly four months after the World Health Organization declared coronavirus a global pandemic on March 11, this is the first action by the UN wing tasked with protecting international peace and security. The council was widely denied failure in any action, as more than 10 million people became infected with the virus, and various wars lasted for several months.
A heated dispute between China and the US has blocked the agreement for months. The U.S. declined to mention the WHO, and China was furious when the U.S. insisted in the first months of negotiations to accuse Beijing of the virus.
It is not mentioned in the final draft of the WHO resolution. The resolution calls for “a general and immediate cessation of hostilities in all situations on the agenda and supports the efforts undertaken by the Secretary-General.”
He says a ceasefire of at least 90 days would help “enable the safe, uninterrupted and continuous delivery of humanitarian aid” during a coronavirus epidemic. The fight against ISIS and terrorism in Iraq is exempt.
Despite more than 100 countries agreeing to the goal, the UN acknowledged the impact of UN Secretary-General Antóni Guterres ’call for a ceasefire due to the virus had no dramatic impact.
Voting takes place over a two-day period and will take place almost due to the closure of the council council a few months ago, when the epidemic hit.
The results will be read on Wednesday from 11:30 p.m.
