Burnley condemns “White Lives Matter” banner over Etihad Stadium in Premier League match against Manchester City
“We want to make it clear that those responsible are not welcome in Turf Moor,” read Burnley’s statement.
“This is in no way what the Burnley Football Club stands for and we will work fully with the authorities to find those responsible and issue life bans.
“The club has a proud record of working with all genders, religions and faiths through an award-winning Community program, and opposes racism of any kind.
“We are completely behind the ‘Black Lives Matter’ initiative of the Premier League, and in line with all the other Premier League games undertaken since the launch of the Project, our players and football staff have willingly knelt at the start in Manchester City.”
“We unreservedly apologize to the Premier League, Manchester City and everyone who helps promote the ‘Black Lives Matter’.”
Manchester City won the game 5-0 to keep alive their hopes of retaining the Premier League title.
“Shame and disgrace”
Monday’s game was the 12th Premier League game to be played after the season resumed after a coronavirus pandemic was called off.
“I’m ashamed and ashamed that a small number of our fans decided to skip that around the stadium,” Burnley defender Ben Mee told Sky Sports after the match.
