Martin Gugino: A 75-year-old Buffalo protester has a broken skull and cannot walk
“I’m not free to elaborate at this point other than to confirm that his skull is broken,” Gugin’s lawyer Kelly Zarcone said. “Although he is not yet able to walk, we were able to have a short conversation before he got too tired. He appreciates all the concern for him, but he is still focused on the issues and not on himself.”
CNN could not speak directly to Gugin, but in his statement to the media, Zarcone conveyed a message from him: “I think it is utterly unnecessary to focus on me. There are many other things to think about besides me.”
Gugino is focused on getting better and remains in rehab, Zarcone told CNN on Tuesday.
“If I ban myself for something unusual and unforeseen, I don’t expect much change this week,” she said.
Gugino was injured when two police officers pushed him back during a June 4 protest against racism and police brutality. Footage of the incident shows him falling on the sidewalk, and his head began to bleed as other officers passed by him.
Based on the original video, police issued a statement stating that Gugino stumbled and fell, Buffalo police spokesman Mike DeGeorge told CNN. Police later amended that statement and suspended unpaid officers and opened an investigation.
