Prince Harry writes to a Ghanaian veteran to congratulate him on his fundraising efforts
Prince Harry applauded the veteran for starting the difficult task well.
“Even when I’m young in ’95, I guess it wasn’t an easy task,” he wrote in a letter to Hammond, which was also seen by CNN.
“However, given the service and selflessness you’ve demonstrated throughout your life, it doesn’t surprise me that you would embark on such a challenge – and that you wanted to walk even more miles. As you said yourself, it’s amazing!”
“He’s a veteran and I’m a veteran. I sat quietly and thought … about his accomplishments and wondered why, if he did it in Britain, at 95, I can do it myself,” he told CNN at the time.
Both Hammond and Moore fought in Myanmar, then known as Burma in World War II. Hammond says he served as a mechanic in the Army where he was tied to 3rd Colonel Gold Coast as an infantry, fighting alongside the British Army.
Prince Harry praised both veterans whose achievements he said provided a “beautiful example to the world” about the importance of serving one’s community.
Last year, during a celebration of Commonwealth soldiers in the UK, Hammond met with the Queen and members of the royal family, including Prince Harry for whom he was loved. “Especially this man, Prince Harry, I glued to him because he’s also a soldier. He was in Afghanistan. We talked about the military, my battalion. We exchanged ideas. It was wonderful,” he told CNN.
Recalling the meeting, Prince Harry said in his letter that it was an “honor and pleasure” to meet the veteran. “It was an honor and a pleasure to meet you last year in the field of memory in London. Meghan and I send you our warmest wishes,” he added.
