Shark Attack: An Australian surfer dies after being bitten by a great white shark nearly 10 meters long
A man from Queensland was killed while surfing on Salt Beach near Kingscliff on the far north coast of New South Wales, according to Surf Life Saving New South Wales.
On Sunday after 10 a.m. Sunday, police and emergency services reported that the man had been attacked on the beach. Several other surfers and drivers on the boat were already in a hurry to save him, fighting a shark and then helping the man knock him down, local police said a statement.
He was bitten on the back of the thigh and received first aid on shore due to severe injuries to his left leg, but died at the scene, Surf Life Saving said in a statement.
The beaches between Kingscliff and Cabarita will be closed for 24 hours.
The area is now monitored by members of the first police, police and biologists.
Surf Life Saving has deployed several jet skis, drones and helicopters to find the shark. Authorities noticed it from the air and took photos.
Shark biologists evaluated these photos and human bite marks and determined that it was a large great white shark that was about three meters (9.8 feet), according to Surf Life Saving.
The attack is the latest in a handful of other deadly shark encounters this year in Australia. In January, the diver was apparently attacked by a large white shark off the south coast of Western Australia, although his body had not recovered. In April, a park and wildlife officer killed a shark near the Great Barrier Reef.
