BYUtv broadcasts “The Chosen” during its public LDS conference this weekend
SALT LAKE CITY – BYUtv acquired the broadcast and video-on-demand rights for the first and second seasons of “The Chosen,” a popular series that narrates the life of Jesus Christ.
On Thursday, BYUtv announced that it will be broadcasting “The Chosen” on Sunday, October 4th. The first three episodes of Season 1 will be broadcast together starting at 5:50 AM GMT. Episode 4 will air at 1pm MT, and episodes 5-8 will be broadcast weekly on Sunday starting October 11th at 4pm MT.
The eight episodes will be freely available on the BYUtv app and website starting October 5th.
“Introducing the first broadcast network to feature what could easily be the most easily produced production ever seen on the life of Jesus Christ is an exceptional opportunity and a significant win for BYUtv,” said Michael Dunn, BYUtv’s general manager, in a statement. “The Chosen has already been seen by nearly 50 million people in more than 180 countries, and feedback from viewers has been very positive about the realistic and poignant portrayal of well-known Bible characters in a new light.” “
Directed and co-written by Dallin Jenkins, “The Chosen” used a low-budget pilot episode in 2017 to generate more than $ 10 million – one of the largest public-funded media projects ever, Deseret News previously reported.
Jenkins has said that he wants “The Chosen One” to stand out from earlier images of Christ. Narrated through the views of those close to Jesus, the series portrays the faithful as a compassionate man with a good sense of humor, according to Deseret News. The first season was released in 2019 and has been featured on VidAngel and other streaming platforms.
The second season began filming in Goshen, Utah, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built a replica of the Jerusalem movie to film scenes from the Bible (2011) and The Book of Mormon (2017), according to Deseret News.
Deseret News reported that Jenkins called it “the most extraordinary group”. “We will be able to tell the stories of Jesus and his followers in a way that elevates even what we were able to do before. The story deserves better and this is better. There is no other group like this in the whole world.”
In a statement sent Thursday, Jenkins said he wanted “The Chosen” to reach as many homes as possible.
He said, “When I made a short film about the birth of Christ for the first time on my friend’s ranch in Illinois, I had no idea it would lead to The Chosen and its global response.” “I am grateful for BYUtv’s belief in the series and their desire to share gospel stories with the world.”
In addition to “The Chosen,” other programs airing on BYUtv over the weekend of the General Conference include the premieres of two new shows on Sunday – “Come Follow Up” and “Hello Sunday” – a peek at upcoming seasons of “The Fixers” and Random Acts and movies such as Hook, The Other Side of Heaven 2, Ever After, and Cheaper Than a Dozen.
