Trump News Live: Latest election update as the death of the RBG will unleash the Supreme Court nomination battle
Barack Obama has warned that democracy in the United States is at risk if Republicans continue their plans to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat with the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Her death six weeks before US Election Day will likely spark a fierce battle over whether President Donald Trump should nominate her replacement in America’s highest court, or if the seat should remain vacant until the outcome of the November race against the Democrats. Challenger Joe Biden is well known.
“One of the fundamental principles of law – and of everyday justice – is that we apply the rules consistently, not on the basis of what is appropriate or useful at present. The rule of law, the legitimacy of our courts, and the basic workings of our democracy all depend on this fundamental principle,” Obama said in a statement. .

Senator Lindsey Graham rejected the idea in 2018, saying at the time: “If an opening happens in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the initial process begins, we will wait for the next election. [Chairman]. Hold the tape. ”
More recently, in September, Senator Lisa Murkowski said she would not vote to replace Ms. Ginsberg before the election, saying, “fair if it’s fair.”
Senator Susan Collins reportedly said only this month that she would not vote for a Supreme Court nominee in October, telling the New York Times: “I think that’s very close, and I’m already doing it.”
The Republican-led Senate will require only 51 votes in order to successfully confirm a next Supreme Court judge after changing voting procedures to allow a simple majority in 2017.

Lindsay Graham’s video goes viral insisting that vacancies on the Supreme Court should never be filled in election years
Lindsay Graham, the Republican chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is under pressure to turn down any Supreme Court candidate Donald Trump introduces to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg – as he himself has promised time and time again.
The South Carolina senator, who is currently fighting his most competitive Democratic rival since being elected to the House of Representatives in 2002, has previously voted for two candidates presented by the heads of both parties.
However, in 2016, he joined the Republican boycott of Merrick Garland, the man Barack Obama had nominated to replace Antonin Scalia.
