Scientists discovered strange alien-like marine creatures during an expedition to Antarctica
These previously unseen strange marine creatures have been discovered under the ice in Antarctica by baffled researchers.
Alien-like creatures are revealed in a documentary Secrets of Antarctica Shared on YouTube to document their journey.
The ongoing mission has seen an international team use the latest technology to survey the sea floor, according to reports The Daily Star.
Dr. Dave Bowden recounts his astonishment at alien life forms with strange characteristics.
Among the discoveries are sea lilies, called crinoids, that were only previously found in fossil records.
The scientist also explained how he found a sea spider that grows with very large legs and a small body.
Another strange finding is the sponge, which has no nervous or digestive system, and is fed by filtering water through its pores.
He said: “The reason is that the continental shelf in Antarctica has been isolated from the rest of the planet for many years.
“This is a sea spider, and it’s one of the interesting groups in the Antarctic group system because it’s so much more diverse than the rest of the world, it grows very large.
“There is a tendency in some groups to tend toward gigantism. It is basically all legs, and there is no body at all, which is unlike anything we know.”
He added, “This is an example of another wonderful beast. It is a worm with many thorns. You will find them under a rock, but this is much bigger.” [than normal].
There is debate as to whether Antarctica is the reason these things are larger, or if there are subspecies of this animal that evolved in Antarctica that are not found anywhere else.
“ But one of the most fascinating discoveries I got from my trek was on a marine mountain north of the Ross Sea, where we found an unusual group of sea lilies – lilies – that are closely related to axolotls.
The main difference is that it is installed in one position.
“The only place we’ve actually seen before is in the fossil record. We’ve never seen anything like this before alive on the sea floor.”
