Flights from Canada, the US, India and Thailand were the first to arrive in Britain after the Government lifted night flying restrictions. Aviation authorities in Europe agreed to change the size and shape of the no-fly zones, opening air space through areas that are not polluted by the ash cloud.

All long-haul passenger services from Paris' main airports and most shorter flights are operating as scheduled, airport officials said yesterday. The first passenger off the first flight from Canada, Neil Rogers, from Little London, near Reading, told the BBC that the atmosphere on board was great.
